Library-Themed Event

Friends of the Library: A Virtual Adventure

I am soooo excited about this virtual event coming up on January 24, 2021. This will be my first literary event of the new year. Sponsored by Adventures by the Book and the Carlsbad (California) City Library, the event will feature three authors as we discuss our books, which are set in libraries in New York City, Kansas, and Mississippi.

New York City

New York Times best-selling author Fiona Davis will talk about her book The Lions of Fifth Avenue, which is set in the iconic New York Public Library. This fictional story takes us back to 1913 and then forward to 1993, spanning eighty years and several generations of a family with strong ties to the library. I have read all six of Fiona’s best-selling books, which are all set in historic buildings in New York City.

Kansas

Romalyn Tilghman is the author of To the Stars Through Difficulties, which was inspired by the fifty-nine Carnegie libraries built in Kansas in the early 20th century. I met Romalyn at the 2019 Pulpwood Queens Bookclub Girlfriend Weekend, where we were both on panels.  Her book was actually part of the inspiration for my short story collection Friends of the Library.

Mississippi

And of course Friends of the Library is set in libraries in ten small towns in present-day Mississippi. These stories were inspired by my visits to those towns on a “library book tour” to speak about my novel Cherry Bomb, which had been published in 2017. The stories are fictional, but they are inspired by the librarians, Friends of the Library members and other library patrons, and of course, the towns themselves.
